Alpha vs Theta Waves

Alpha and theta are frequency ranges used to describe patterns in EEG data; neither is a guaranteed mental-state setting.

The basic distinction

Theta occupies a lower-frequency range than alpha in common EEG conventions. Both are studied across multiple states and tasks, so their meaning depends on context.

Why audio products mention them

Brainwave-audio products often use alpha or theta labels to signal an intended listening experience. That label should be treated as a description of the audio protocol or marketing position—not proof that every listener's brain enters one uniform state.

For meditation

Some binaural-beat studies have tested theta-frequency protocols and measured subjective calmness, focus or other outcomes. Results from a particular protocol should remain tied to that protocol.

See all frequency bands and brainwave audio for meditation.

Research note

Scientific context in this build is based on recent PubMed-indexed research, including a 2026 systematic review of music/binaural-beat interventions and a 2026 systematic review/meta-analysis of theta binaural beats. Both support cautious, protocol-specific interpretation rather than universal claims.
